I tried it w/o the flash, but it was way too dark, and I only have a mini-tripod, and that was shot on my black bedsheets.... so no way to get stability on a matress... maybe i'll set it up again and reshoot w/o flash. I did notice the flash washout though

Try taking the picture using a timer and your mini-tri pod. That should work. Set the timer back up so you are not leaning against the bed which would shake the camera.
