Computer people: I'm having sound problems

Alright well it's still acting up. I forgot to mention the computer came with this Diagnostics prog for the sound card. For the past few months, it often has a "fail" grade on the "mixer settings check" category. I would enable the program to fix itself then it'd come back after several days. Now it's gotten pretty bad that this diagnostics program can't fix it.

Click on the performance tab and see what your processor and ram is using.

Nothing really. CPU usage is at 1% and I have 42 processes running with 247M out of 926M in use.

Then I'd call up the company that made the card and see what they suggest.
