Default howto request : buying a new car

how do you buy a new car? how do you get them to get the price down, but still get exactly what you want? what's a good down payment on a ~20k car?

if you have those kind of questions, bring an experienced friend with you. i would aim for at least 20% on the downpayment.

go in there with some knowledge and no shame at all. itll help if you go in there with a good friend.

understand the mentality of sales people, theyll do anything to sell you a car at a price that will profit them. so tell them, fuk that, im paying what i want to pay. if that doesnt work, go to another dealer and try again.

Best thing to do is go close to the end of a sales day at the end of the month. Like an hour before they close when you are ready to buy. They're usually more willing to break a good deal to get their sales figures up for the end of the month. End of the year is the best time tho because they really want to push as much cars off the lot to boost annual sales and make room for the following model year.

You only have to put money down if you have bad credit or if you absolutely must have a lower monthly payment.

To get the price settlement go in there with facts about the car and the MSRP.

Once you have that go a little above MSRP (gotta give somewhere right?) but set your highest price you will give....then set your lowest price you will give and do not go above your highest possible price regardless of what they say. Be so willing to walk away from the deal that it hurts them.

If they don't give an inch then just get up like nothing shake their hand (doing this in silence really helps too) and turn around......5 bucks says you don't even get out of the cubicle before they are renegotiating with you.

always be willing to walk away..that is most important. Another is to not show any signs that you even like the car. Make a lot of hmmph type sounds rather than groans of appreciation. The less interested you look the more bargaining power you gain.

Pick the salesman you want...I know this sounds odd and usually they rush you but tell them politely to go away and you just want to look around for a minute and if you are interested you will lokk for someone to talk to. Then look at the car and check out the salesmen.....look for the one who appears hungry they will hustle for the deal a bit more.

thats it pretty simple overall but it takes some getting used to...the most important thing is that you have to remember they are trying to get money from you which is a privelige not the other way around.

when i bought my sol last year it had 72k on it, not bad for a 94 in great shape. the sticker said $6,995 so i said " does that sticker say 6,400?" the guy said no but i can sell it to you for that, then my dad got another 500 off by saying "come on you can't take alittle off that car?". well that is just for a used car not a new one...

don't listen to this man! he is nuts!

He means INVOICE not MSRP.

I would usually offer $500 over invoice. Also check www.edmunds.com to see if there are any incentives for the dealer or for the buyer.
