in my friends E34 1990 525i he changed the tranny fluid at 180K miles and BMW was pretty smart. They magnetized the drain plug so a lot of the metal shavings were stuck to the drain plug. He removed it and thought it was 2 times longer than it really was

but his tranny still works well at 230K miles (also automatic, should be same as yours)
