Try resetting the router(unplug and replug the power) Also, if your settings are messed up in the router(ie only allows four people to connect) and four are already on, it won't let a fifth on until you go into the router settings and change them.

yeah if you are transfering file from one system to another frequently, but a G class wireless router will get you around on the web just as fast as CAT5 plus the advantages of going pretty much anywhere in the house you want and still be connected to the intraweb.

I suppose but I do transfer a lot of files to and from my server and I also have my house wired in every room so I doubt in the time it takes me to walk from one room to another and plug back in I would miss much at all

Besides I like the reliable speed and no loss of signal errors I get on a solid line as opposed to wireless.....signal degradation and conflicting signal is a bitch sometimes.

True. I love the traditional CAT5/RJ45 set up. I don't like this wireless thing unless I am at my friend's place with my laptop.

dont get me wrong, wired as of right now is def. more reliable etc. but being in college I am not gonna spend the time to wire my entire house, and it is nice to be able to go into any room with my laptop and be connected.

Did you go into the router configurations and see if it somehow got set to only allow certain computers to connect? If it did, you'd have to enter each computer's MAC address. If it isn't set up like this, it should be, unless you want any random person with a wireless card to use your connection.

Also, you could check to see if there are any firmware updates.

Oh, and as for Linksys, they don't have a terrific track record either, especially since Cisco bought them. A lot of people seem to get disconnected pretty often on both wired and wireless Linksys routers. I think that Linksys, Netgear, and other home router manufacturers need to seriously improve their quality assurance departments.

The weird part is that none of the router's settings were altered  my friend said he downloaded the latest firmware last month.

i had a linkshit router in my place, and i thought it was garbage. i needed to reset it often, and connections would time out often. i dont think it was user error, because the SMC Barricade and US Robotics routers i've also owned worked flawlessly.

thanks to everyone for your help. much appreciated!
