Ehh it depends on what your lookin to do. I use a 164 k2 fatbob (I gots big feet) And if you have bigger than a size 13 umm I definately suggest a wide board. Sure it turns slower but at least you can attempt to make toe side turns instead of catchin your toe and fallin more than ya have to.

novice (but want to do more) riding style

Look at boards between 156 and 164 also and again all mountain style board until you get familiar with a particular style of riding.

You need to decide if you ride goofy or regular as well, some people I have seen, think they are regular and have a hard time, and we end up switch their bindings so that they are goofy and end up riding alot better.

I would also put your lead foot at 15 degrees it seems to help people I have taught start out. When I buy decks I get a deck that is up to my chin. If you find a well known shop, they will generally help you figure everything out as well

Price will vary by manufacturer and intended useage.

Burton is good as are most companies...the only one I stay away from is Lib Tech because they used to have a lot of problems and dealt more with "jibber boards" which are freestyle specific boards.
