215 is the highest I'd go. I did manage to get away with putting 225s in the front at the dragstrip, but of course I didn't have to turn sharp.

No worries...

Tramlining refers to a car's tendency to follow the contours/ cracks/ variations of the road surface, which is felt through the steering wheel as a tug left or right. This problem is particularly severe on cars with tires that are actually too wide...because, especially under braking, the shape of contact patch in front is wider than it is long.

As shown in this [shitty] diagram, the grey oval shows an excessively wide contact patch.
The red arrows illustrate the forces placed upon the tire by elevated sections of road. As the tire contact patch gets wider, without getting sufficiently long, the leverage these forces have upon the tire is enough to affect the steering of the car.
-------

The rest of my earlier post was me debating internally whether or not a 225/40R17 tire would even fit or not. The answer is: I don't think so....

tramming has more to do with tread pattern than size.

i used to get traming with 205/50/15 good year GA as well as 225/45/17 and 245/40/17 dunlops.

the current 235/45/17 and 255/40/17 toyo t1-s does not tramline at all.

also it's not just the forces on the tires but the tendency of the tire to follow the groove/lines on the road surface.

I don't think 225s will fit inside your fenders.

I concede that I oversimplified things. And you're right, the tread design of modern tires has advanced by leaps & bounds in the last 5 years alone. Those are impressive results from the T1-S tires...

the michelin pilot sports are terrible. 225/40/18 255/35/18, tramlines like no other.

Actually... it's funny you should mention the PS2's, my dad just equipped the A6 2.7T with a set of 225/45/17s. Very impressive compared to the OEM ContiSports. Reminds me of the TRX tires on the Peugeot 505 STI..amazing feedback improvement....:happysad: God, I miss that car....
