While most people are saying "Screw you, M$! Too late!", I'd actually like to commend them for at least making it appear that they are listening to the consumers. They fucked up in a major way, looked at what was in front of them, and changed direction. I'm very surprised they did this.

I'm almost sure they had insight to the Amazon pre-sale numbers and shit themselves.
The consumers have the power. It's as simple as "don't buy it". I've NEVER seen that tactic ever work until now.
Ex. People get pissed at EA for Simcity ... they rush to buy Battlefront 4 and Call of Duty 2K14.

I chose the PS3 over X360 because I knew nothing will ever stand in the way of M$ getting their money. At the time, XBOX live failed as a value propostion. Now, the utterly tone-deaf way in which Micro$oft defined DRM for the XBOX One only confirmed my suspicions. Ballmer's greed knows no bounds, and this week's emergency retreat changes nothing.
I may not spring for a PS4, but without a doubt, M$ can go to hell.
