Not only is it slow, but that 4-cylinder, from what I've come to understand, is also troublesome and will give you relaibility issues.
If you seriously want a BMW, by all means save a bit more and look for a 323i. It is without question worth the money.
Good luck eitherway though.

The 1.8 thats in the 318ti is also a detuned version of whats in the regular 318.
The car is very nose heavy, as it has the trunk cut off to make a hatchback.
Save your money and get a 318is or a 328is; they look sexier and aren't the redheaded stepchild of the BMW family.
There's a reason that BMW started selling 318ti's for under $20K new.

BMW folks will point and laugh at 318ti owners....after all everyone else does too
Don't waste your money they have some serious issues.....its the car you buy when all you care about is having a BMW badge in your garage.

unreliable detuned? where the F do you guys get these bad information?
it's the same engine as the 318i 138hp ~135lb of torque.
if you can find a M sports package one it will have very very nice handing!
however, know what you are getting into... It's not a fast car and nothing short of an engine swap (not cheap like honda swaps) is going to make it faster.
the suspension is also twitchy near the limit specially if you don't know what your doing.
