Default OEM Prelude stereo issue

about 1 month ago I purchased a 99 Prelude..the only issue and it's a small one..is over the last 2 weeks, sometimes it doesn't want to play CDs at all. It doesn't sound like it's trying to read them or anything. It's the OEM head unit BTW.
From what I can tell after outside has cooled down a bit it plays fine. In the morning on the way to work it plays fine, after I park outside a bit I put a CD in and it sit there and displays a E 00 and spits the CD back out. Eventually I will want to replace the unit with an aftermarket mp3 CD player but don't want to spend the money now.

Any suggestions on this or has anyone ever seen this behavior on their stereo before?:wtf:

When I got my 95 prelude the stock deck didn't work because the battery had been disconected. So I got the code and it worked for about a day, I listened to most of my cd's and when i switched to a new cd it stopped working. I got the E 00 and it would spit the cd back out and it never worked again. So I dont know what to tell you, I think they just break.

You have a weak laser. Eventually it's gonna go kaput for good. But I'd say you still have some life left in it. CD lasers are kind of hit or miss. The laser in my Pioneer car CD changer is still great and it's the original from 1997. Same for my Sony home CD changer from 1996. I do see alot of late model Panasonic CD players at work (your factory head unit is Matsushita/Panasonic). We see Pioneers and Sony as well, so like I said it's hit or miss.

Well I went out today after consulting with several people and purcahsed an Alpine 9807 CD mp3 player..$299 with free install. I didnt wanna spend that kind of money today but the CD player spitting out the CDs and me trying over and over to reinsert and get it to play was kinda irritating.

That's a nice head unit. Did they install it yet? If not, you may want to double check on the free part of it. Installing an aftermarket head unit on our car involves bypassing the factory amp for the rear speaker accoustic feedback system. Some places will charge a little extra for that once they see what it needs. Free usually only includes basic head unit install as if all 4 channels run straight off the head unit.

Yeah it's installed already. I dont know if that was wired up or not honestly. Hell I didnt know that was even there (I just know that the sound on the stock stereo was better than the sound in the stock Accord I had). They just pluged in the headunit...hmm

Is there a way to know if it was done and what else would it involve outside of just plugging in the headunit..I watched him do it and it looked pretty straight foward. He did say there was a piece of something that was behind the unit that looked like it went to a CD changer..was that it? If so it got thrown away (insert: f ** k)

EDIT: Well I have a warrenty on the workmanship..I could take it back but is there a way of knowing if it got hooked up or not?

I just went out to listen to it, I think all the speakers are hooked up. The unit itself seems much more powerful than the stock unit..the BASS setting is at 0 (even) and if I push the volume to 15 (orless even) it sounds just punishing to the back speakers...very rattling and some distortion. I dunno...this stuff is a bit out of my league.

Sounds like everything is hooked up right. If you're getting good bass out of the rear speakers they hooked it up right, no doubt. There might be a bypass they can do right at the head unit. Alpine makes great head units. You're sure to enjoy it.

Fastball,

FYI - YOu don't need to bypass the factory amp for the rear speakers if you are only putting in a headunit. You will need to do that is you are going to change the speakers. just FYI

Thanks. I just figured something had to be bypassed somewhere, but since I did a complete system, I didn't know exactly what and where.
