Default infamous tensioner prob...

hey, for everyone whos had the infamous timing tensioner prob I have a few questions, I tried searching already and couldnt find the answers, roughly how much does the tensioner cost, because I will have to do it myself.... and also, I read about someone switching over to a manual tensioner from an h23 motor and they said its better but didnt elaborate..... any insight will be appreciated, thanks

The H22 auto tensioner will 99% of the time go to shyt. The H23 manual tensioner, for some reason fits better and doesn't break. It is I believe around $40 from Honda, but I'm nto sure on that price at all. Good Luck!

mine has functioned fine on 3 different motors with a total of 120,000 miles on the odometer.

the only problem with the auto tensioner is serviceability and ease of use. it's a pain to swap timing belts with the auto tensioner as you cannot loosen it. you have to install the stopper from Honda and remove it to loosen up the belt, or buy the cam gear adapters to help slide the belt on and off.

If your lazy use the auto tensioner and take a chance. The manual is safer but you have to take the time to tighten it. The manual tensioner will be better if you work on your car alot yourself. If you dont have cam gears yet and you are planning on installing them yourself you'll want a manual for the ease of installation.

so in order to take the tensioner off i need that special stopper otherwise there is no way to take it off? also.... did you guys hear the GRRRR noise on deceleration only or on acceleration as well? and more or less so when the car was cold or the same?

I know which sound to look for as far as the tensioner goes, and i can hear it a tiny bit on deceleration, I have 55K miles, so by the time its due for a timing belt then itll prolly be due for the tensioner as well, so if Im doing a timing belt then will it still be a pain like you are saying drift or not, also the sound im hearing which is a lil louder when the car is cold could be the CAI its like a rrreee sound under partial throttle.....

no, you can take it off without the stopper, but you better have another tensioner within your possession since the one you remove is gonna shoot off of there and you'll lose some of it's parts.
