Default Vtec problems

Hello,

I have a 99 base Prelude. When I start my car in the morning, and the engine is still cold, the vtec will not kick in. However, when I get around 6.5 rpms, the car jerks hard. When the car is warmed up and I turn off the car and turn it back on, it will start to work.

Any suggestions? The car is in great mecanical condition (except this).

VTEC doesn't engage when the car is cold.

You're retarded for trying to rev to VTEC engaging rpms when it's cold.

...it's not like it's 20 degrees out. It was closer to 50.

And thank you Prelood.

You still have to wait til the engine is warmed up to optimum operating temperature.

VTEC will not engage untill the engine is up to full running temperature. It's programed into the engine management computer.

Reason being is when VTEC engages, it requires high oil pressure in the head. When an engine is cold, the oil hasn't warmed or fully circulated. If the computer allowed the cams to shift when cold and the oil not fully circulated, you'd be looking at major damage.

DO NOT attempt to rev engine over 3000 RPM untill the temp gauge is at the half way marker. Even if VTEC isn't engaging, you can still rev the engine, and that's not good when it's cold.

I always shift under 3k when the temp gauge is below the half way point.

Yeah mr. smart guy? Unless it's 180 degrees out you shouldn't be revving it until the guage moves if it's dead cold.

I'm sorry? I can't really understand why you are being so antaginizing. Did I say something to offend you, or is this just an ego thing?

Another question, will reving up high do an increadible amount of damage? I don't Vtec when it's cold (except the one time) but I do go kind of high. Am I in danger of any damage popping up later? The car is in great condition now, so I'm not worried about that.

Anyways, thanks for the informative posts.

It all depends on who replies on the forums......If you continuously REV high on a daily basis then in the long run you will run into problems....There really is no reason to REV your engine high all the time, its a daily driver right...so i wouldnt drive it like a race car..lol
