How difficult is that to do myself? I've done 3 timing belts, exhausts, front shocks, engine mounts, and various other repairs. I also have a complement of air tools. I just don't like being under the car for extended amount of time, and the weight of the trans worries me a little.
I wouldn't do a clutch yourself. You need axle pullers and you may need to take of the entire wheel, ie. disk, caliper, etc., assembly in order to get the axles out. The car needs to be in the air and you would need a tranny lift to do anything right. Preludes happen to be a bitch when putting new clutches in. I know. I just had my dad put one in for me, and i watched most of the process.

As for price, 550-650 is the average. 900 is way too much in my opinion, no matter year, make, model or trim. If ATTS is major, then maybe it should have been 800, but your brother-in-law got ripped.

MY dealer quoted me $480 plus parts. The book says 8 hours at 60/. This for our CRX. Just think about the time required to disconnect and remove all the things associated with the ATTS and that is where the time goes. A clutch kit for the CRX sells for ~$275 at the dealer parts counter, a Prelude should not be much different.

Yeah i called around some more and one guy did it buy the book and said $498 for labor only. Some other shop wanted $750 for parts and labor. I think those are in ballpark.

I found an Exedy clutch on eBay for $110 shipped from buyclutch.com!

doing the clutch yourself isn't too difficult. there are a lot of sensors and bolts and other shit that can get kind of tricky if it's your first time dropping a tranny out, but once you drop the tranny it's fairly simple to install the clutch.

i just got my clutch changed today. $350 for labor. i would have done it myself but there's no garage for me to do it in

Clutch jobs are easy, just time consuming if you don't know what you're doing. A fellow board member and I did a clutch job on a del Sol in about 2 1/2 hours... with complications.

Flat rate time for a trans swap is usually around eight hours. Add another hour of labour for the clutch swap, plus the cost of a flywheel resurface if they do that (which they should.)

So the hour rate will be (since you think that 900 bucks are "average") around $80-90 an hour .. wow .. that's a lot ,, honestly 500 is the "average" 900 is for Porsches or other breed of cars ... altough preludes are very special ... that's why is 500 ... Civics are around 350-400 for that service ...

To have the clutch changed at a dealership, $900 is about right. An ATTS Prelude burns a lot of time on the clock. Older Civics and the like are a bit easier and the price would probably reflect that.
