i just read in my Roundel magazine....
....The 1 series will debut later this year; however, given the American consumers' aversion to hatchbacks, it is unlikely we will get this model.....

Tony is right, there will be no 1-series hatchback in this country.
"Tom Purves, CEO of BMW of North America LLC, said the U.S. market will get only one body style of the 1 Series - not a hatchback - and two engines, most likely six cylinder."

We're definitely getting the car but obviously BMW would rather not sell a hatchback in the USA given the reception of the 318ti.

God... all BMW has to do is label the hatch version as some revolutionary compact sedan-SUV "crossover" and watch the sales roll in.
Look at the Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe. Americans don't buy wagons but they buy these things, which are clearly not wagons.

I think people here are a bit more receptive to five door hatchbacks than three door ones. Probably because of cheapie specials like the Hyundai Excel and Plymout Colt. Still if you look at sales of cars where there are both hatch and sedan or coupe versions, the ones with trunks tend to do the best.
I'm only interested in the 3 door hatch but that's not going to make it over either....
In the US trunk versions of cars outsell the hatches by a huge margin.
just look at the golf to jetta sales.

Not having a 1-series hatchback in the US was a smart move by BMW. As a premium automaker, which is their marketing position here, there's no need to have a cheaper hatch version. Look at MB's "sport coupe" - its essentially a hatch and most people know that which is why it sells like crap.
