1999 Honda Passport 56k has broken fuel gauge. The car/ truck
is my fathers and is a lease due back in October.Just wondering

Here are the specific symptoms on the broken fuel gauge
for the 99 passport. When you start it it will go to empty,
then the gauge will fluctuate, and when you drive 3-4 miles
will fall back to empty and the low fuel gauge light will come
on.(the tank may not be empty in reality).
thanks for replying

Sounds like a problem with the float. I'd start with dropping the fuel tank and take a look inside. A Haynes manual might be helpful in doing this.
IMO, this is going to be a job and a half.... and will cost a small fortune to get a dealer to fix. I would recommend disregarding your gauge altogether. If you know how many miles per tank you normally get, you can track your fuel level with the trip odometer.

Dude, I have the same problem on my 98 gf's dads Passport! The fuel gauge just simply fluctuates. Sometimes it shows full gas when I know I'm at a half, sometimes it shows empty when I still have about 1/3 tank left.
Anyone know the problem and how to fix this? It's pretty dam annoying.

i just purchased my wife a 2000 passport and she had the same exact problem, the dealer said it was the fuel sending unit that went bad and fixed it for free, the car is still under warrenty and i dont know each of your situations, but i would have honda look at it and check into fixing it under warrenty..
The car is out of warranty, not in terms of mileage, but interms of years. It only has 31k miles for a 98, purchase new at the end of 97. But thanks for letting everyone know what the problem is.
