I might be crazy... I just went to check it again.

There's definitively an extension tube coming from the bottom of the filter box going down behind the lights. I am pretty sure it's stock as the brand HONDA is stamped on the box.

I have a 98 GS-R btw

ihave not taken mine apart yet, but i have looked at the installation pictures for an intake.

from the little i know: the tube you refer to is going behind the turn signal....not to cold air, but to your stock resonator, which in turn pulls its air from the engine compartment.( the resonator not only restricts airflow but dampens the noise the motor makes...which most hot-rodders would rather hear than not hear.)

anyways... the resonator has to be removed to install the icebox because that is where the new intakes mouth is positioned.

you can look in the DIY section and see where someone made their own icebox by removing the resonator and rigging a hose to the bottom of the stock airbox, it would work but you loose the smooth and efficient interior of the icebox....unless you are really good with fiberglass or some other molding technique......

PS... there is nothing special about a short ram intake compared to your stock one, at leat not as much that you couldnt somehow rig your stock intake elbow to a filter after removing the stock airbox and get the same gains.....the only difference i am aware of is the material they are made of (metal aftermarket vs rubber stock) im guessing this isnt done more often because.... well i dont know why...anyone have an answer?

you can order it directly from the company.
www.comptechusa.com

www.modacar.com has it too i think. From there you might be able to get the honda-acura.net discount and have it a bit cheaper. Do yourself a favor and buy the filter at the same time.

Default JUST INSTALLED ICE BOX

i am going to start a new thread about it, but i figured i would answert this guys question here.

The ice box rocks! you may not have as much fun with it without a v-tec motor in your car, but you will still feel the gains. After i put the thing on i could FEEL myself sinking in the seat more than i used to( at WOT)... and the sound! IT is not much louder than stock, but when you step on it the thing sounds pretty tough.....thats what i meant about you not having as much fun though, without those secondaries to open up you wont hear that badass howl in the upper rpms.

as far as actual gains, i have heard 7-10 hp, but i am sure that comptech used a completely modded car for dynoing their product ..... its only smart business

oh yeah it only costs about $168 i think, and there is no need to buy that 150 dollar short ram intake, it is needless. hell you dont even have to buy an expensive filter, i am still using stock filter and it works great! but i will probably upgrade next time i replae it.
