The horror stories is because people don't understand that you can't take a stock LS block to 8k....probably 7500-7600 max. The stock rod bolts like to strech...hello spun bearing and rod knock. Most people are too cheap, and too dumb to build the motor properly, they just want an "LSVTEC cuz it's fast and cheap y0, I'm a racer." News flash, it's not cheap, and it's not easy. If you build it correctly, it will last.

I know having an auto tranny is a major cause of lose of hp.. so how much better would it run if i just swap tranny, if possible? They did make ls 5-speeds right?

Yes, a lot of them.

The you will get a few more wheel HP (from less drivetrain loss) and a much quicker overall feel with a five speed manual. I would not even consider an LS/VTEC auto. The transaxle is not really strong enough for it and you will loose too much power through it.

You can get the transaxles and parts anywhere, the price of conversion varies widely by the shop that does it.

An LS transaxle should be a little cheaper then $400, IMHO.
