You can also think about installing a kill switch to cut all power when you park in a place you're not to comfortable parking in. Of course you'll lose you pre-sets on the radio and if you have a stock one, you'll have to put in your code all the time. Just a thought...

Other good kill switches are on the ignition, fuel pump, and headlights.

Default the best protection you can have is...

theft insurance.

hate to say it...you can use all the theft prevention methods you want, but if they want your car bad enough, they're taking it. no way around it.

transponders are great for keeping someone from hotwiring your car, but a tow truck doesn't need your car to be running

diehard (i think) makes a battery that has a remote power cutoff built right into it. basically what drumsy was talkin about...it has a circuit breaker that allows power to flow to the radio and clock even when the cutoff is active, to prevent loss of radio stations, radio security code, etc.

if someone tries to start the car, the power draw is too much for the circuit breaker, and the power is temporarily 100% off. when you return, you deactivate the cutoff, and the car runs normally.

obviously breaking in, opening the hood, and putting a different battery in would bypass the system...but it makes the theft a little more difficult, and might cause them to move along to easier targets.

a really good method is using an alarm that has a wireless relay system. this allows a small receiver to be installed somewhere on the fuel pump power line, or similar vital system, to be activated/deactivated by the alarm brain but doesn't have any traceable wires to follow. if you have an ignition kill relay, someone can find the alarm brain and follow the wires to the starter kill, and bypass it. the wireless approach requires the alarm brain to send a coded signal to the relay that could be ANYWHERE in the car, and even if they find the alarm brain, there is no way to force that unlock signal to be sent w/out having the remote to the alarm. this is very very hard to bypass.

but like i said...a skilled tow truck driver can have a FWD car on a hook and rolling in a couple minutes...and nobody looks twice at a car being towed even if the alarm is going off.

Autolocks/Clubs only buy you time. Cutting the steering wheel/pedal defeats both devices, but it'll obviously take some time to do either. If you're parked outside at night, neither device is going to do you much good. Blocking your car in with another car (preferably in your driveway) is a pretty effective method.

Note that most car thieves use a tow truck of some sort.

I use an Autolock. As long as you put it on snug and tight, it would seem very difficult to get off.

I also use a Club, but not on the steering wheel. I put the shifter in 5th gear, pull the parking brake as far up as it'll go, and lodge the club in between, lock it, then release the parking brake on the club so theres tension, and voila more time for a thief to jack my car. The arm rest gets in the way, and the bend in the shifter makes it more difficult to remove. Try it out guys.

I also turn my wheels all the way in one direction so it makes the car more difficult to tow.

Of course I also have an alarm.

I usually dont go through this whole "routine" unless I'm not within earshot of my alarm (about the only time i'm not within earshot is if i'm at school, where theft is quite common)

you could try a pager too...i have a pager for my car. twice i've had it beep and run outside to find some asshole tryin to break into my car (in mission hill...a not so nice part of boston)...they just ran away both times as soon as me and a couple people came out and saw them.

so far the only time my car has been missing when i go to find it is when some tow company takes it cause i parked illegally or when i was a bit too fukkkked up to remember where i put it. dude, where's my car? it's happened...
