need some advice on CIA.
i bought a cold air intake for my 99 gsr. i keep hearing from some of my friends that if i put it on im going to have to park the car if it rains basicly. has anyone had any problems with theres? is it even worth the trouble? for now i just put on half of it so its runnin like a regular intake. please help!!!!!
Well there's this thing called "hydrolock". It happens when the filter on a CAI is submerged in water and therefore sucks it into the engine. Therefore the pistons can't compress that H20 and "lock" up, and your internals are pretty much ripped to pieces. It's not very common but can however happen to you.
I believe one of the mods has pictures of this...
You can buy an AEM bypass valve if it is compatible with your intake, and you would never have to worry about hydrolock again. These run about 40 bucks I believe. Many people don't use a bypass valve however, because it supposedly hinders the performance of the CAI and therefore would make spending all that extra money over a Ram-Air useless.
In my opinion, with a 2 piece intake like you have, just leave the CAI extension on during the summer or dry season and you can take it off, just to be safe, during the wet season. Plus, you can always pop it on real quick if you're going out to race or to the track.

I second the two piece motion. If the week calls for rain, switch to short ram. If it's sunny, go cold. Basically, you don't want your engine to suck up water through the intake/intake manifold. Your engine creates a vacuem to suck in air, and if there's water near, on, or in the filter, the chances of that being injested are high. I haven't seen too many cases of hydrolock from CAI's, but just always be aware of what the road conditions are in the rain, and if you see a BIG puddle and it's THAT BAD and you HAVE to go through it, take you foot off the gas and coast, or better yet, kill the engine as you come up on it, coast through, restart on the other side. Works for me....
also......i dont know how to get the second half of my intake in,....i have been doing some reading and know one has really told me how to get it in. i hear some people say that i need to take off the front bumper and some say i dont. but no one is able to tell me how to do it.....please help
See if you can drop the front plastic guard on the passenger side off, only takes a few screws. Try and come up through there and attach the bottom tubing with filter to the top tubing with the rubber hose and clamps.
It is supposed to be easy to get the passenger side fender guard off but on my car there were these plastic screws holding it on from the inside. We had to peel off what we could, unscrew/unbolt all the metal pieces and when it came down to a few bitch plastic screws holding it on, we used a lighter to melt them off. Not ideal, but very necessary. My friend had tried to take them off with a bolt cutter, pliers, etc. It should be pretty easy though. Just try peeling it off and unbolting any pieces. I also recommend jacking up the front passenger side and taking off the wheel. It'll make things much easier. Good luck.
