well, keep in mind that i never, ever use A/C (except recently in the super hot weather we've had).. and yes, my driving is mostly highway, so that helps of course.. i don't drive it hard often. and while the engine is cold, i keep the revs below 3000 rpm.. all of this helps.

btw, difference between the 205/50 and my stock size of 195/60 is only 0.6%.. which means i'm clocking an extra 6 miles for every 1000 miles travelled. i don't think it'd affect the mpg calculation much.

in the city, i got around 25-27 mpg. that was with 205/50/15's, but i always shifted around 2500 rpm. when i started playing around in VTEC and when i turned my a/c on, i got between 21-24. but on the highways, i got 34 mpg. now i drive a durango, and i get between 11-13 mpg.h:

 

i got 225 miles on my current tank and have about 1/4 - 1/5 of a tank left... thats pretty good for my gsr considering how hard i drive it

 

hmmm....if i do most city driving i get from 23-25mpg, if i go most freeway (about 90%) i can get up to 29mpg. This is an LS AUTO... so a manual will get a few more mpgs. edmunds rates the LS auto at 25/city and 31/highway... so i think these numbers are about right

...this is with moderate driving and rarely bring the car over 5000rpms

 

damn, what am i doing wrong? i just got the car and its a 95 with 55k miles. i get into vtec maybe 4-5 times a day at most, and half city and half highway. the A/C is on maybe half the time. i got like 20.6mpg on my first fill up...should i replace plugs, fuel filter, etc? what exactly should i change?

 

4-5 times a day? yeah, VTEC sucks up gas like no tomorrow, so i'm not suprised. stay out of vtec for a while and you will see it go up.

 

it makes THAT much of a difference? will hangeing the spark plug wires and fuel filter help? what else can i do?

 

i get like 23 mpg city. VTEC at least 5 times a day. 28-31 mpg hwy, 80mph with many blasts to ~100.

 

The best I've gotten is 35 MPG, the worst was around 23 MPG. Consistent, city driving, and traffic in Los Angeles I get about 27 MPG. This is with a JRSC, but it's very rare that I goose it.

This is as accurate as I can get, I use the trip odometer, reset each time I fill up. Every time I fill up, I go to the same gas station and use the same pump, and lett he tank fill up slowly until it first shuts off. That way I'm sure to get a consistent fill from tank to tank.

FYI, I believe it was Car & Driver, just a little while back that did a study on odometers and speedometers. Speedometers were, in all cases but one indicating a higher speed than the vehicle was traveling, however, the odometers were all just about dead nuts right on. So regardless of indicated speed, your vehicle should not receive any excess milage in stock trim. I have 205/50/15 on mine, but like was stated before, this is a very slight difference, certainly NOT .5 gallon per mile as was suggested by Red GSR.

In fact, let's do the math... we're looking at tire circumference...
195/55/15 = 73.65" circumf
205/50/15 = 72.48" circumf
if the stock tire were to travel one mile down the road, and the 205 were to turn an equal number of revolutions, the 205 would end up just under 84 feet short of a mile or 98.4% of one mile.

Over a 1000 mile stretch, the difference in odometers would be 16 miles. This may sound like a lot but there is much more error to be found in the actual amount of fuel consumed based on how full you fuel tank was to begin with. Tires that are 1.6% smaller than stock will not make a whole lot of difference in fuel milage.
