For daily driven cars, the benifits are
Synthetic oils also work better at low temperatures because they flow much more freely down to -40 to -50 degrees F. Also, synthetic oils start lubricating much sooner and reach critical areas much faster.
The advantages? Longer intervals between oil changes are possible because synthetics suffer less breakdown due to the better base stock used. Usually the synthetics will have a better additive package, allowing the oil to clean better among other things.

You are correct, a car that is beat on is a car that is beat one. Synthetic oils can reduce the damage that is done though.
There is a difference between a mechanic and an oil speciallist. Just because he can change parts on your car, doesn't mean he is an expert on oil.
Not everyone needs synthetic oil, sometimes dino is more than enough, sometimes a synthetic blend is enough. There are plenty of situations where synthetic oil is worth the added cost, even on small, daily driven engines like B18's.

I see him on Honda-tech every once and awhile.. he had a good 11 page thread on oil going there on the TypeR Forum.
I also hear he is on the edmunds.com forums as well, and he is on Bobtheoilguy's forums as well http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi.
Kinda wish I had saved that thread before the crash, it had lots of good information on it.
