This sounds like the same thing that is happening to my car, I just swapped a type R engine into my 95 civic. Got it all put in and started just fine, reversed out of the shop, when I went to put it into first, nothing. Now I can shift through all the gears without the clutch in and it never grabs, I just replaced the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. Still nothing. Also as I shift the speedo changes, the higher the gear the higher the speedo sits, 5th gear, around 20 mph. also when I rev it the speedo goes up also

i dont know for jay....but dcsmith sounds like the half shaft isnt all the way in? it wouldnt explain the reverse situation but if your half shaft isnt all the way in the car wouldnt move nor grind etc.... it just wouldnt move when clutch out.
