Cheaping out on a turbo is a sure fire way to blow up an otherwise perfectly fine motor. Expect to spend at least 2500 on parts and then you'll need some means of getting enough fuel into the motor, ranging from cheap and inelegant to about 1500 bucks or more and very reliable when tuned by someone who knows what they're doing.

you're gonna need to rebuild to handle the pressures of higher boost. lower comp pistons, stronger rods, etc.

If he wants to boost 8psi on that stock block, he won't need a rebuild....of course this is assuming the motor is currently in good condition.

Yea i was thinking around 8-9 psi... I just bought the car recently and it seems to run great considering its a 91'... so hopefully if i turbo it, i wont esssplode. heh.. So i should expect around like 3,500+ for a turbo thats gonna be reliable, and jus runnin like 8 psi?

The parts themselves aren't what determine how long the motor's gonna last. The main thing you have to worry about is getting enough fuel into the motor.

Ideally you want to run an upgraded fuel pump, larger injectors and a programmable ECU (in the case of a non-OBD car like yours Zdyne is the way to go). After a couple hours on the dyno it'll be running very nicely, assuming you picked a good tuner.

Run rich baby, run rich

Mind you dyno time will cost a pretty penny

hey bro rebuild the engine first, do around 10.0-10.5 compression that way if u ever want to vtec it u don't have to mess with the bottom end and it'll be pretty simple.

if you are pretty knowledgable then you can probably piece togethere a good solid turbo kit for under 1500 . but u gotta know where to find good parts etc.

Why raise the compression for turbo? So you can run less boost on pump gas? So you can be more prone to detonation?

The main problem with VTECH is people don't wear it in right. This totally messes up your vtech performance and life. When you buy a new vtech you must run the battery all the way down before putting it back on the charger.

it's better to have a balance boost and hp. u don't want to ahave like 9.0 and have like 14 psi etc because all u gonna get is mad wheel spin. u want to have like 7-8 psi and not as much tq from the start so u can get a good launch and then higher end the compression and the 7-8 psi comes in and takes the car off.
