Does it sound labored when you try to start it like something's holding it back?

Things you need to start your car: spark, air, fuel, compression.

If it smells like fuel around the engine, it might just be flooded. Try holding the accelerator to the floor (full throttle) while trying to start it. If it starts, let off quickly so as to not rev it like crazy. This will open your throttle body up so that you get as much air as possible and help to deter the flooding.

i checked the plugs....pulled 2 out, grounded them while someone cranked the car....no spark.....had the distributer checked, its good....checked the fuel pump again....its good

is there any sensor that would tell the ECU to not spark if the clutch wont disengage from the flywheel?

No, there isn't a sensor for that.

Is the rotor in the distributor any good?
How did you have the distributor checked?

If you haven't replaced the two recently, I'd replace the rotor and cap. They're regular maintenance items anyway. Might want to do the plugs too if they're old.

Did it have a stong smell of fuel when you took the plugs out?
