Does it sound labored when you try to start it like something's holding it back?

Things you need to start your car: spark, air, fuel, compression.

If it smells like fuel around the engine, it might just be flooded. Try holding the accelerator to the floor (full throttle) while trying to start it. If it starts, let off quickly so as to not rev it like crazy. This will open your throttle body up so that you get as much air as possible and help to deter the flooding.
