Welcome to the board.

The post corrosion is easy to remove with either a dry metal scrubbing pad or better yet.. a wire brush. To stop the corrosion from re-forming, buy a set of anti-corrosion terminal pads at your local auto parts store. Also, don't forget to remove the corrosion from the battery clamps as well.

 The second issue sounds more like a drain on the electrical system.

Given the age of your car, I'm suspicious about the health of your alternator. If it's not putting out sufficient voltage to recharge the battery as you drive, a new battery will lose charge over time.

Remove the corrosion first and see if the car starts. If not, I'd remove your alternator and have it tested at Auto Zone or some other shop to ensure that it's operating to spec.

if you have a local garage near you have take your car to them and have them check the amperage on your alternator. They'll probably stick a VAT-40 or something near that on there and it will them the amperage. I know autozone doesn't have a vat-40.......well maybe they do but i seriouosly doubt any of them are smart enough to use it the correct way. Just try a local auto shop, i'm sure someone can clamp an amperage clamp on the wire and find out the charging state.

This happened on my '95 GSR...I took out my starter and had it tested at Autozone. Result = bad starter. I replaced the battery when I installed the new starter too.

My guess is the starter. Save yourself some money and just replace the starter contacts. The same thing happened to me about 2 months ago. Most import starters are gear reduced and don't ever wear out. You can buy new contacts for like $8.

When you turn the key to start the car, does it make one click and then the lights go dead? If so it could be the wire that runs from the positive battery terminal to your starter is loose or corroded, happened to a few people i know including myself twice... just check to see if the wire is loose or corroded, clean it off or cut down the wire to get fresh wire and tighten up the terminal thing as much as you can. If this fails then yeh go buy a new starter... Always try to save the expensive choices for last.
