Default axle help

Hi i'm new here, and to the acura scene alltogether having just purchased a 94 integra ls. I've been into older BMW's scince i got my lisence, but just recently got the acura as a track/summer car because my e30 costs way too much to break on a regular basis. i got the car pretty cheap because it was the victim of a front end hit (the wheel pretty much took the force of the impact) which bent the lower control arm and pulled the inner cv joint completely apart. my question for you guys is how i should go about getting the spindle nut off. if the axle is broken like mine is, im guessing that because there is no resistance on it that the spindle nut will just turn freely with the axle. the reason why i think this is because i have step by step instruction for replacement of an axle that says i have to leave the car in gear which makes me think it needs that resistence to remove the spindle nut....

anyhow, i was just wondering if somebody could help me out, any input would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Wes

I'm assuming you have access to an air compressor and an impact gun. Give that a try first. (32mm socket) I'm assuming it will work. If not, my suggestion would be to sell the car. hehehe. just kidding. Time to bust out with the monkey wrenches.

Step on the brakes and then remove the 32mm nut. Simple as that.

yeah my buddy suggested the brakes idea. im gonna try it as soon as i get my lower control arm in so that i can set it back down on the ground. the front part of the arm has got about a 15 degree bend in it, and it snapped one of the bolts holding the two parts of the arm together. im hoping that was the extent of the damage and it will still ride ok once i get it back together.

You don't need it on the ground. Just have a buddy step on the brakes and then take a breaker bar to that nut.

well at the moment the whole hub is swinging freely in the breeze due to a lack of connection with anything besides a broken axle and steering linkage, so as soon as i get the new lower arm in i'll give it a go.

but anyways, thanks for the replies. i posted this same thing on 3 other similar forums and havent got any responses except from this one. i appreciate it guys.
Thanks,
Wes

if its still connected to the wheel you should just be able to put like a bar between the brake pedal and the seats and get an impact to take it off. Unless the spindle itself was chewed up and it spins freely like you said. If thats the case you might have to just chisel the nut off to get the spindle out. I kinda had to the do that on my accord before i sold it.

The nut was frozen in place and stepping on the brake really hard didn't even help. I had a breaker bar about 6 foot in length and about 2 inches thick and it couldn't do it. i just spun the wheel. So i had to get a chisel an ball pean (sp?) to get it off. Lucky for me the other side just came off easy with the breaker bar.

You could also stick a pry bar through the spokes of your rim and spin the wheel till it catches and locks the wheel up. Then just use a impact gun or breaker bar and break the spindle nut loose. Just make sure the bar catches on something sturdy that wont break or get damaged.

yeah thats another good idea, didnt think of that. i dont think the spindle is damaged at all, at least im hoping it isnt. as far as i can tell the damage to the axle itself was done just at the inner cv joint, which was ripped apart upon impact. i'll update when i get my control arm and a few hours to screw with it. thanks again guys
