Studs ALWAYS break. after a lot of heat and the lug staying on there for a while its all just bad news. Most of the time when a shop put the wheels on with the air tools they have a torque bit which will only torque so much.. I never snapped any studs off of our normal customers.. just the ones who randomly come in. :shruggs:

I will disagree. I have my car for 5 years and it has seen all types of heat, cold, beatings and anything you can think of... But not once had a broken stud. I TQ them myself and except for track time I use free hand TQ (no wrench).

Other cars I have owned I have only broken a stud once. I would say it's not a common thing if TQed right most of the time.

I disagree, and I agree with Rob. I've driven over 20,000 actual track miles on my cars, and I have never had a stud break.

I torque my lug nuts myself using an accurate manual torque wrench.

Not necessarily. A lot of shops use an air wrench without a torque bit, and do it by "feel". They may wind up with a proper amount of torque (80 ft lbs) but there's no way to be sure unless you manually torque them yourself.

Advice: Buy a good torque wrench and always torque your lug nuts yourself.
