I will disagree. I have my car for 5 years and it has seen all types of heat, cold, beatings and anything you can think of... But not once had a broken stud. I TQ them myself and except for track time I use free hand TQ (no wrench).

Other cars I have owned I have only broken a stud once. I would say it's not a common thing if TQed right most of the time.
