so if your rolling at like 80 mph in 4th your not in vtec?!?!
there are a lot of factors for vtec to kick in but it does not have to be wot

Cruising at 400RPM you will not engage the VTEC lobes. I have well over 100K miles, have done several long cruises at 90 mph+. My car is still running great. That 20% thing is a load of crap, if that were true, I'd go from 30mpg cruising at 60, to 24mpg at 70, which does not happen. Stop and go makes you suck gas more than high speed cruising.

when i drove down to houston from dallas in my gs-r, i had cruise set at 85, windows cracked, sunroof open, tires at 35 psi, and i was getting 34-35 mpg. and that was going at it a couple of times with a mustang also(up to 125).

Cruising at high rpm is actually good for the car, more flow, less deposits. I do it as much as I can (I drive a lot in traffic in the city), helps purge the engine.

My '92 GSR tranny is shorter than the '94-up so 80 mph is about 4600 RPM in 5th. VTEC point is somewhere past that on the B17 so no worries there. I've made a round trip from Maryland to Wisconsin (820 miles each way) no problem.
