Default Shift Lock Release

Hey guys, I had a question about my automatic...

Why is it that I always have to press down on the shift lock release switch do take the car out of Park. I know that with other Hondas you dont have to do that. I asked some guy and he said something about the Overdrive or something... Help me out guys

it should automatically release the shift when you hit your brakes. there is something wrong with your interlock system. i would take the console apart and check it out. there is a soleniod in there that is activated when you hit your brakes.

Turn your car on and keep it in park. Have everything as quiet as it can be and slowly apply the brakes. When the brake lights go on you should hear a relay click for the shift release. If you don't then you might need a new relay. Take out the center counsole up to the dash and take off the black part of your shifter, where it says the gears. Check around there for connections and cables that are disconnected or any objects obstructing any working parts.

What happens if you do hear the relay click and it still don't come out of park?

If the solenoid on the shifter does click but it doesn't release the interlock, it needs adjustment or replacement. However, this interlock has two functions: 1) to prevent putting the car into gear without the brakes applied, and 2) to prevent removing the key without having it in park.

On my GS the solenoid doesn't like cold and requires some coaxing (i.e., punching the lever forward until it triggers the Park switch) when the ambient temperature is below 63°F to get the key lock to release.

Since you are apparently able to get the key out with no problem, the solenoid is at least functioning and might just need adjustment. Be forewarned, mine had the same problem as yours before I adjusted it and now it has the "I'm not in park, you may not take the key out" problem. At some point I'll replace the solenoid (considering that that little thing is about $150, I'll keep pounding the shifter for a while).

Default shift lock release

Thanks to all that replied to my question. You were all very helpful. I think that i will just keep hitting the shiftter too. I am getting a new civic in February, maybe it will hold out until then. Nothing else seems wrong with the car other than having an anoying cv joint going out. But I have drove on them busted for months. I might fix it but i doubt it. It's not bad yet.
This next honda i get will definatly be a standard. Then I can't have this problem again.

Thanks everyone,
Jaden
