Default Backing Plate

Ok. So yesterday I went to Altons to get my brakes checked. 30 minutes later they came back out and said my brakes were fine but my backing plate was bent so they fixed it. I said great, thanks, and left. When I backed up, no more noise!! Woo!! Today got back from my church function and I noticed as I was backing into my driveway, it was making noise again.
Arg! What the duece is the backing plate, is it nessecary, can I take it off, and can someone show me what it looks like?! This is a real pain, it keeps happening.

I haven't heard of a backing plate. Is it the shims that they are referring to? It could just be shitty pads since none of my pads have shims but they don't squeak.

If you could better explain the noise and when it occurs, it would be easier to help.

the backing plate is the thin round metal disk that chills right behind the brake rotor. its supposed to keep some of the water from splashing up onto your brakes. u can see them without having to take everything apart, the diameter of the backing plate is larger than the diameter of stock rotors.

to fix the problem u can either replace the backing plate or try to bend it a certain way or straighten it so it wont squeek. to replace it u have to take everything apart so i tried bending it but i was unsuccessful with my bent backing plates. i think the shop charges like $500 just for labor. so yeah.

when my blades were stolen they left my car on the road with no jacks or stands or anything, it was just sitting there....so all four backing plates are bent up on my car. whenever i turn the steering wheel it squeeks, but i learned to live with it. id rather spend my time doing something else for the car. after all, they still serve their purpose.

Oh, so it is the rotor shields. If you cannot bend them back and the noise really bugs you, think about replacing it/them. The whole hub assembly needs to be taken apart to replace it though, so if it bugs you that much, be prepared to pay a good amount to get it/them replaced.

Gah. I'll have to go back to Altons and have them bend it again. Why does it bend so easily?

The backing plate really is just a peice of stamped sheet metal. You really should take your own wheels off and check them yourself. The plate may be rusted and flopping around. Just get a screwdriver and bend the plate away from the rotor, spin the wheel and see if it makes the noise. If not your done. It may bend itself back and touch the rotors again, well repeat... or pay out the a$$ for new ones.
