Default Help with CV Axle

Hey guys.

I am in process of changing my cv axle, drivers side on my 94 integra LS. I have a delimma- I have no air tools to get the spindle nut off, and all the local shops around here wont back it off for me due to legal reasons they say.

Can I just use a breaker bar to loosen it up, or what? And will transmission fluid leak, or is that from the passengers side only?

thanks guys!!

a braker bar will work just fine, I have used one many times to do axles, I dont think any tranny fluid would come out.
Good Luck

you will need a friend to hold on the brakes or stick a solid bar in the vent and brace it against the caliper. otherwise, you wont get that sucker loose.

yea there is a hole in the top of the caliper..u can put a big flat head screwdriver in the vent through there...that will hold it fine...and yea the first time i took my spindle nuts off i used a 4 foot peice of pipe and broke a socket wrench before i got it off...but now its easy...its only when they have been on for a long time...

I wouldn't wedge anything in between the rotor to keep it from moving. It puts a lot of strain on it and you risk warping it under that kind of torque. Just have someone riding the brakes so you can break that sucker loose. Air tools are ideal but a breaker bar will work if they aren't too tight. Mine came off no worries when I did both of my axles h: but I have heard some real horror stories about trying to get the frozen nuts loose.

If you are replacing your intermediate shaft or passengers side axle, you need to drain the tranny fluid. It is probably a good practice to replace the fluid when you do an axle replacement anyway.

Only jack up one side of your car, and the tranny fluid won't leak out, it will flow to the opposite side of the tranny. I have successfully changed both my axles on my 92 RS and didn't leak a drop either time. And yes the fluid level was full, lol, no trick answer here.

As far as the axle nut, just break it loose with a breaker bar before you remove your wheel. Now, the crankshaft bolt is another story...

Breaker bar, your good. No fluid. I personally used an air gun, but that is only because my buddy owns an import shop out here in Colorado. Racing Trenz!!

hey guys, thanks for your help. I got it off, no problem. The socket size is 32mm for the front in case somebody wants to know down the road. Also, be careful not to pull and push on the CV axle when you are replacing it. You can damage the bearings inside the housing, like I did, and have to take it back and get another one. I reccomend sticking the spindle inside the hub first. Then, have someone lay under the car and line up the splines for the housing, then using a block of wood hit the hub with a hammer until the housing is seated properly. Also, sticking a crowbar in the lower control arm and prying down lets you move the steering knuckle and pop the ball joint out , which lets you lower and pivot the hub so you can remove the axle. When you have enough clearance/motion to knock it forward, get a hammer and a 1/2 inch extension, and just keep tapping the bell housing until it comes out.
