Default Temp problem on teg (over heating), need assistance.

My 95 122k teg is overheating again. I had this prob in Nov and it went away after a tune up (dont see the connection) After last week driving on the San Francisco hills, my temp gauge was moving way up! Last time in Nov it did that it cause one of my hoses to blow!

Now even when I do just a 15 min highway drive and come to a red light it will move way up. But if I just run the car in idle for even 20 mins with a few short high revs it will stay at normal temps.

I also had the cap off the radiator and I was able to see the flow of the anti freeze when I'd rev the car.

I took the car for a drive and the temp did climb up again but I didnt see the fans turn on, but if I hit the AC button on the both start up.

Is this just a bad thermostat or something else?

I had the same problem..my fans wouldn't turn on..i replaced the themostat and temp sensor and it still didn't work..finally i took a paper clip and put it into the fan switch plug and the fans turned on..so it turned out to be the fan switch...try rigging your fan switch and see if they turn on..you might want to also replace your termostat and flush your radiator..that will also help in cooling efficiency.

Also, bleed your coolant system. If you have air bubbles, you may experience the symptoms you'rs describing...

It's likely the fan switch or the thermostat.

Mine was the fan switch.

You can also turn on your heater to help alleviate the problems if it starts to get warm. That's what I did until I got a new fan switch.

I bleed (bruped) according to the service manual topped off w/ AF and ran it. The fan never came on as it said it would. The fans work since w/ AC the spin. Also once the normal temp range was reached (just under mid way on gauge), I head a humming sound. like the sound of fluid being pumped throught the engine. I assume that was the thermo opending up and the AF circulating. SO next im jumping the switch

I just had this problem on mine too... tried to fix it sunday but i dunno whats goin on but i do know a little... On honda engines there are two coolant temp sensors... one controls the fans and the other controls the gauge... I replaced the gauge sensor (this is located under the distributor and goes straight into the block (.75" bolt)) first (not knowing that it only controlled the gauge)and of course saw no results... but then I talked to a different guy at the parts store and there is another sensor that goes into the thermostat housing... it's shaped a bit differently and goes in behind the block where the lower radiator hose goes in... My fans now turn on but only when my gauge reads a little under halfway... this seems way too hot and my car never heats up this much and the gauge reads nothing when i'm driving... the air circulation brings the temp way down...

Jumped the switch and the fan started up. I bought the Fan thermo switch to replace $37.00 but it got too dark and too late last night so I'll do that today. Keeping fingers crossed.

Default Overheating issue

Hi there,
I have a problem that i need help with. (k first off i'm a girl so no noob comments please thanks)
Just last week, my 90 Teg started overheating, at least that's what i think it's doing. My temp gauge stays at a nice in between the middle and the cold, so it doesn't look like it's heating up. I'll be driving to work (freeway, about 30 mins) and by the time i get there, i have smoke coming from the top of my hood (not a lot but enough) and my engine is puking a little antifreeze (i'm assuming that because i can smell it). It pukes out from the middle area of my engine, not the front.

i checked my resevoir and it was almost empty, so i filled it with water (all i had at the time) while my engine had been off all day, so as not to create a problem with a hot engine.

I drove home and no problems. A little smell of antifreeze but from what i could tell it was just burning off my engine, not dripping.

Drove to work this morning, and same thing again. I let the engine run for a while, and the fan comes on and all, so that part isfine. Now there is a bunch of water on the ground under my car.
I didn't think to check the actual radiator, as you can probably tell i was following steps other people have posted here to help.

Any suggestions? Does anyone think i have a leak perhaps? This just started last week, the last thing i did in the engine area was fill my oil because it was low.

Thanks

Most likely you have a leak in one of the small hoses around the intake manifold. I have a 91 Integra and about this time last year I had this problem several times. You car is a little older than mine, and I'm willing to bet some of those hoses have not been changed like mine hadn't.

The problem is some of those hoses are REALLY buried under a bunch of crap. If it's easy to get to, then it shouldn't cost but a buck or two for the hose and 5 minutes to swap it out. If you find that it's one of the hoses that's really deep and hard to get to, it might be a bit more involved. If this is the case, you might want to go ahead and replace all of the hoses in the area, as you might have a problem with more of them as they are probably all the same age.

Open the hood, and with the car running AND WARM, look at those hoses around the back of the engine, around the intake manifold, and throttlebody, and see if you see any coolant dripping... If you do, try to see if you can't tell which hose it's coming from. Currently your car is not overheating, but it will if it runs low on coolant, so keep filling your radiator after each drive. Note: DO NOT OPEN THE RADIATOR CAP WHILE THE ENGINE IS HOT!!!!!! Wait for it to cool down before filling the radiator.

*Update*
After I changed the fan switch, I noticed that a few days later I had problems again with over heating. So I replaced the thermostat. All was fine for about a week or so then again problems. Well I now know what it is. Its a leak. Each time I have the heating problem, I'll noticed my antifreeze level is way low. I'll fill it up and about 7-10 days later car wll heat up again and will need to be refilled. I noticed leaking from this area. Its a gasket but I dont have the part number, can someone please look it up?
