What about routing the inlet to a hole drilled in the bumper of the car? wouldnt that allow most cold air to make it to the intake? and wrapping the headers in heat tape, along with the intake?

The difference in air temp will be very minor.
The hole in the bumper will look ugly as hell.

And since the DIY icebox uses PVC tubing, it's nowhere near as thermally conductive as a stainless steel header is. I doubt wrapping the intake would have much effect, unless you were dealing with a very poorly ventilated engine bay.

Interesting forum. Now my questoin is, do I: Try to buy an aem cai for my car or buy a 20 dollar ebay cai for the pipe, a K&N filter and turn mine into an icebox? Hmmm....

And import guy, you are pretty off on some of your comments/suggestions.

Think about what you just said, that makes no sense. If your going by what it says on the box, first off you shouldnt believe everything they tell you, secondly,it doesnt flow better,it filters better...and the more it filters, the less it flows.
Don't believe what they say on the box? thats like saying dont expect trix just because you bought a cereal box with the trix label on it? Secondly, the stock intake setup is very restrictive, switching the fliter alone allows for better airflow while still filtering the car optimally. Also, you would turn down a 2-3 horsepower gain(at least) from building an icebox for like 40 bucks? Heh... what is that... 13 dollars per hp as a minimal gain horsepower? And a whole turbo kit add roughly anywhere from 40-80hp for the cost of just about a grand... which is... 25-12.5 dollars per hp, and I'll tell you, you need some damn good work to get 80 ponies out of a turbo, over 1g. So the gains from the intake are easier, and cheaper. I'll take it!

Another example, header, decently small gains for a few hundred bucks, and none of your other modificatoins will work as well as they would with a better flowing system! Just my .02

im just saying, *technically* you could get one for like 1g, custom built and if you ordered all the parts, but it would be eh quality. My friend is building one and so far has all but a few pieces, including something to actually manage it, but is only up to like 3-400 dollars.

1) Importbuyer hasn't been in this thread for nearly half a year.
I doubt he's coming back.
2) With all this talk of alternative power adders, we're drifting off topic.

Let steer this barge back on course. Thanks.

Quick question that hopefully someone knows the answer to, since we're talking about K&N filters. I have a generic short ram intake with a generic, dirty air filter. I want to get a conical K&N filter that will fit and won't look stupid. I believe the intake pipe to be 3" diameter. Can someone please tell me which K&N filter (part number) I need to get? Thanks.

Default What?

If your trying to make a diy icebox, measure the inner dimentions of the airbox...if you just want a part number, start your own thread!j/k
Look in the K&N book, you want one where the diameter of the bottom is larger than the top, what size is your choice...you don have to get a large one for it to be effective...
