Since the rear trailing arms are interchangeable with the EG Civic, it is possible that a prior owner replaced a set of bent trailing arms on teh cheap by throwing on a pair of EG Civic arms. :dunno: If those arms were from a CX or HX, that would explain the presence of rear drums.
It's certainly not something that I would do. :eek3: In fact, if your brother drives enthusiastically, he'd be better off IMHO switching back over to rear discs.

ok, you got a few points that I was already aware of. These points besides the suspension are mostly minor things. Like a strut bar, it doesnt help as much as sway bars. One mm difference in a sway isnt going to make that much diff either. The biggest thing that the R has over the gsr and rs is suspension. Other then that not really anything that is uncorrectable about the rs with a gs-r motor.
I don't think the GS-R subframe is different from the RS or LS, but, I know the Type-R is reenforced to cope with a thicker rear sway bar. If you want to put a stiffer rear sway bar on an RS/LS (I think the GS-R as well), you need to reenforce the points under the bushings where the sway bar attaches so it doesn't end up tearing out.
That also brings up the point of the RS with a GS-R motor/transmission being superior to a real GS-R because it doesn't have a moonroof. I wouldn't be surprised if that's true since the Type-R has thicker stampings in the pilar and roof area. G3s are known to be squeeky; their chassis aren't very stiff.

GSR/GS/LS/SE/RS all have 4-wheel disc brakes STANDARD! There are NO differences between subframes on these models. The GSR was equipped with a 24mm front sway bar, the submodels had a 22mm (94-7); 98-01 GSR submodels then upgraded to 24mm as well. GSR had 14mm rear whereas the 94-7 LS/RS/GS/SE coupes had 13mm (sedans had 14mm), then 98-01 ALL models (minus the ITR) upgraded to 14mm rears as well. There is NO difference in spring rates or dampener stiffness between the non-ITR models. The GSR did get a front strut bar STANDARD unlike the RS/LS/GS/SE models.
The RS does NOT have a stiffer chassis than the ITR, as the ITR has reinforcement in the roof, b-pillars, and the rear wheelwells and arch extensions were made thicker - including subframe reinforcement.
Brakes: same diameter rotors (front and back) among the non-ITR models.
94-5 GSR motors had a simple oil cooler equipped from the factory, 96+ GSR's did not.
