Please help: Broken brake master cylinder
Hi everyone,
This is my very first post. I don't know much about cars so if I make a mistake somewhere please bear with me. I have just bought my very first car last month. It is a 1995 Acura Integra LS 4 door. To make the long story short, I am really happy with my purchase but I need to replace the brake master cylinder and the dealership want to charge me $460 for it but being in school I simply can not afford that much. But I really don't want to drive around with hardly any brakes so I do need to take care of it ASAP. A good friend of my boyfriend offered to give me a used master cylinder off a 2000 Integra LS 4 door for $40 which he said it will work on my car. My question is that will master cylinder off that car really work ? The dealership told me the part number for the 1995 compare to 2000 are different. Is that something I should be worried about? I would really appreciate any help on this subject.
Cheers

They changed the ABS system between '97 & '98. I'm guessing that the tube fittings that attach to the master cylinder are a little different. So it won't work without some screwing around with the tubing.
Why do you need a new MC? What's wrong with your brakes? Have you tried bleeding & it doesn't get better?

Hi Jim,
Thank you for the prompt reply. The reason why I discovered I needed to replace the master cylinder the first place is because I took my car to dealership for brake flush. The mechanic that worked on the car told me it was leaking inside. I will follow your advice and stick with the same year master cylinder. I was wondering if you know a good place to get OEM or aftermarket unit? even a used one really... I really don't want to spend $300+ to get it from the local Acura dealership.
Thank you once again for your help.

Hi Cindy,
Being a college student is hard...I remeber those days of being broke!
Try to find a mechanic from www.craiglist.org.
I have have found really great deals on parts and also on people who can actually work on the car for really cheap!

I got a genuine OEM MC from www.ahmotor.com for more like $200, but that was more than a year ago. AutoZone & places like that are even cheaper.
You'll still have installation labor... If you don't install it yourself, find out whether your mechanic will use parts that you bring. Some won't do that.

Also you can use a discount code of 140259128890 in the "Where did you hear about us" field on the online order form for a 5% discount.
