Default 2nd Gen GSR Turbo: Best Tranny?

I will eventually be turbocharging my '92 GSR. First of course I will make sure the Teg can handle the extra power by upgrading the suspension and whatnot. Anywho, the stock tranny in my GSR has 157k on it now and grinds in third. I did some searching here and saw that the Type R tranny may be my best choice. I want to get one with the LSD (or maybe all USDM have LSD?). Would the Type-R tranny be my best bet? I'm only going to be running 7-8 pounds of boost, nothing astronomical. I realize that the top speed won't be as high, but I personally don't plan on going 140 MPH anyway. So what should I do: rebuild current GSR tranny and add on an aftermarket LSD, or buy a new type-r tranny with LSD? Keep in mind this is my daily driver. Thanks! Let me know if I need to clarify something!

if you are going turbo you would want a transmission with longer gears. getting a transmission from a 92 rs, ls, or gs would be best for a turbo set up. the short geared transmission would be best for a n/a set up........
wanna trade me transmissions????

The Type R transmission is a hydro, and would require an adapter kit to work in a cable transmission car. That aside, the Type R and G2 GS-R transmissions are very similar in gearing, both being somewhat short for a turbo engine.

I agree with red.da, use a 90-93 RS/LS/GS transmission. Trade him for his, though I wouldn't mind having your transaxle for myself

Keep the GSR transmission. You probably won't be getting the turbo for a while and the RS/LS/GS gears majorly suck on a VTEC motor.

Hey guys, thanks for the help. How much (ballpark figure) do you think it will be to rebuild my tranny? I am probably getting the turbo this summer, but only after suspension mods. This is going to be great! I'll have a nice looking car with a new engine (30k) and a rebuilt tranny and a turbo! I am so excited about this, I hope this car lasts me for YEARS!!! The guy who sold me the car just sent me a short shifter. Should I install that when I get my tranny rebuilt or just leave it out? Thanks!

That's what I was planning. Is there something wrong with that?

$2 grand for a transmission rebuild is ludicrous.

Heh, nothing "wrong" with a turbo per se, just that it's so rare that people are sometimes a bit reluctant to see them modified up so much. I have somewhat of the same emotional reaction since I had the same car myself and thus far yours has been modified very carefully and tastefully.

If/when you do go turbo, please do it in the style of the mods that have been done to your car so far. Personally I think you should get the chassis nicely squared away which is going to take more money than you may be planning.
