My dad has had a couple and had a double bypass a few years ago.

Although we aren't very close at all I think the majority of your concern may lie more in the fact that you are seeing the strongest man you know in your life starting to age and show signs of weakness. Just remember he is human too and more importantly no matter what may happen he is your father and needs your support.

This is where your relationship will change and instead of him being your strength you will become his.

i think you're right... i saw him yesterday with all the tubes and shit in his arms. I have never seen him that weak and out of it i hope this will also serve as a wakeup call and make HIM realise that "he is huma too" i feel so weird and sad. i hope everything will be ok...

my boss had a heart attack something like 10 years ago. obviously his diet had to change, but he's living a normal, healthy life today. of course, it all depends on the severity of the damage.

Key thing here is that your dad changes his diet and begins to exercise regularly, and to do whatever the doctor tells him is necessary to maintain his heart health. If he has a second heart attack, it will probably kill him or lead to complications that will severely shorten his life.

Good luck, hang in there...

Yeah... My dad had one. It's wasn't easy to see him with his arms strapped down because he had a tube down his throat. The first thing that people do when they wake-up is pull the tube out. Reflex.

If he sounds fatalistic, let him. What Nightshade said is true. Just remember that what you're going though has more to do with it just being YOUR turn to go through it. Not good, not bad, just is. Stand tall. None of it feels good, yet your perception of it all is the only thing you have.

My stepfather had a heart attack last year and my gf's father had one around Christmas last year. It's a scary situation. With myself having tightness in the chest occasionally I really have been meaning to get checked out. I not only get tightness but pain in my left arm as well and I was told those are warnings signs of a "stroke".

Make sure people around you know about how to check...

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say any bystander can recognize a stroke asking three simple questions:

* ask the individual to smile.
* ask him or her to raise both arms.
* ask the person to speak a simple sentence.
