Yeah... My dad had one. It's wasn't easy to see him with his arms strapped down because he had a tube down his throat. The first thing that people do when they wake-up is pull the tube out. Reflex.
If he sounds fatalistic, let him. What Nightshade said is true. Just remember that what you're going though has more to do with it just being YOUR turn to go through it. Not good, not bad, just is. Stand tall.
