Custom turbo plans. some help?
I'm considering a custom kit.
my goals. A fast daily driver tuned, with no soggy bottom end from running too rich. quick spool with full boost between 4,000RPM - 6,500RPM. Looking to make about 190whp with high torque #'s on stock internals, with upgraded tranny, with possibilities of 280whp built with rods and pistons.
Right now I have (120whp/114.7ft-lbs). I have a zex stage 2 camshaft, upgraded valve springs and titanium retainers. If that helps suggesting a turbo that would serve those purposes.
What I was considering in my custom kit. I want to make a kit that would cost no more than $2k if possible.
What I was considering to have in my kit.
Greddy E-Manage
440cc RC Injectors
Tial BOV
Spearco Intercooler
2" Turbo Piping for quick spooling.
GT28R or GT28RS? or other suggestions?

Ok first thing, DO NOT GET EMANAGE!!!!!! you will NOT be able to tune your car effectivly for the best results. Look into programs like Uberdata, or crome. They are free programs that LOTS of people use, you can easily find a tuner near by. The only exspence from this is getting your ecu chipped, and i can direct you to a guy that has an awsome price on this service.
Next, you dont need to blow all that money on Rc injectors, you have other options. If you want to save ALOT of money, pick up a set of DSM 450 injectors, but you do run the risk as they are used parts. The best bet is to go to Tunertoys.com and pick up a set of there correct inject 450 injecters for the awsome price of 250 or so.
Tial BOV is gonna be really pricey, again keeping a kit under 2k means not buying the most exspensive stuff out there, look into the greddy RS as its a nice sounding BOV with out costing to much
Forget about the spearco intercooler, they are exspensive, save your self some money and get a JRC intercooler. You can get a great one for 189 shipped.
If your gonna be running a larger turbo at some point i would run 2.5in charge pipes, i had no problem with spool times running this size and it will give you room to grow, i suggest checking out www.cc-fab.net for there charge pipes, there pretty damn nice
www.cc-fab.net would also be a good place to go for the item you forgot. The manifold. I would suggest just a simple log manifold for your purposes
OK turbo time, i think the perfect turbo for the numbers your hoping for would be a t3 60 trim (http://www.westcoast-turbo.com/turboa.html) has great prices on rebuilt turbos. This is where i sugest you drop a few bills, as having a fresh turbo will make your life MUCH easier.
Your kit is missing alot LIKE
Guages, gonna need oil pressure, EGT, and boost, and you REALLY should run a wideband i suggest plx-m300
Oil lines, easy to get, just go to stealthmodeperformance.com pick up the t3 kit, done.
Down pipe, your just gonna have to pick up 2 U bends and fab your own, best way to do it and there is not shortage of welders in the world.
If you choose to go external wastegate (you should) youll need one of those. Tial is a good choice here
Unless the kit you find comes with them, your gonna need clamps and couplers, should really invest in t-clamps here
Last but not least, look into a tuner in your area for what ever program you choose and get that stuff tuned ASAP not just the cars sake, but for yours because after dropping the amount of money turbos require you deserve to have your car making every pony it can

Well said 2gr84u.
Pick up DSM 450's for around $60, you could send them to RC to have them cleaned and flow tested for another $100 and still come out ahead vs. buying new injectors. Get a DSM BOV which will suit your needs just fine, and with the cash you save on those two items pick up a REAL Tial wastegate, not a knock off. I got a really good deal on 2.5" piping but I cannot remember which place it was, I'll post it up when I do. It will be worth it in the long run to see if you can go OBD1 so you'll have the option of running either Uber or Crome, and with that a wideband is a MUST have item.

the car is auto...ehh. i would recommend a transmission cooler as ur tranny is gonna hate u for tearing thru it gears quicker. switch to obd1, it isnt that big of a deal. i would run crome or neptune, crome would be more readily available as only liscensed dealers can aquire neptune like evans tuning in PA.
i agree on the turbo to, a t3 60trim would be perfect. a super 60 t3 would be even better. it would spool a lil bit later, but ur mid and top end would be a hell of a lot better.
i wouldnt go below 2.25 ever, and i think that 2.5 is ideal. dsm 450's work great, dsm bovs work great and sound nice. get a simple log manifold from rcautoworks (hes making my mani at the moment) u dont really need an egt or a wideband, but they are very nice to have. oil pressure gauge and boost gauge are prety much required unless ur that damn cheap. pick up some t-bolt clamps, u can get like 12 of them for 40 bux on ebay or lsdmotorsports, get silicon couplers from napa, its sold in foot sections and is used on semi trucks. a JRC 6in would work fine, but found a 6in on ebay for 90 bux shipped and it worked perfect and fit perfect. ssautocrap wastegates arent that bad actually. running925 ran one last summer and after blowing 3 motors, the wastegate never creeped or leaked, worked perfectly fine. tial wastegates go used on hondatech tho for 120-150 all day.
personally, i would try and gather parts to do a manual conversion. it really isnt that difficult from what i have read and running925 was able to do it and he said it wasnt bad at all. i wouldnt worry about forged stuff right away, get ur ducks in a row, then tackle a bigger project. cause by the time u put pistons and rods in a d16, u could have probably bought a b18b and turbo that and make more power and have a better base. im all for the sohc love but, to make big power with less effort, a b series is the way to go

I just had another thought about this again...
I don't think I can go custom being that I live in cali, even though I can probably make a nice custom turbo for a good price, if I was to ever get pulled over and a cop is an asshole and tells me to pop my hood, it's going to cost me more than buying a new smog legal turbo kit like Greddy or Edelbrock. I hate cali's CARB laws. I should move. It would suck paying a $600+ dollar ticket, impoundment fees, and than having the hassle of converting my car back to stock and then never being able to drive my car custom without going through the same routine.
I guessing I'll get the eldebrock kit, change the turbo to GT28RS turbo and keep the smog legal stickers, give it the appearance of a legal kit, while being upgraded, selling my old parts that I don't need, such as Skunk2 IM, DC Sports Header, AEM CAI, and Apexi Vafc2 or maybe I can get the open track kit and have someone fabricate me those smog legal stickers/papers and I'd save me some money.

The GT28R isn't much of an upgrade. The spool up will be a little faster and it will have a little more power up top, but not enough to justify the $1k+ price tag.
Were you the one with the juiced Civic at AMS on the 25th and I didn't even realize who you were?

Good luck finding a deal on a disco potato. The demand for the ball bearing Precision turbos is through the roof. A T3/T4 will probably be a problem because you will need to change manifolds and most likely downpipe since the flanges won't be compatible with the T28 manifold flange and the two bolt wastegate flange that the Edelbrock system uses.
