Default Blinkers Stay On

Got a '96 Civic as a commuter. Love it. BUT... after I had it for about a month, the blinkers started staying on AFTER I have completed the turn (both sides). I bought a new (used) blinker switch, thinking that it HAD to be the problem, but it didn't fix it.

Upon closer inspection I could not see any kind of actuator in the steering column that would trip the switch after the turn is complete. I searched the floorboard for any kind of part (gear??) that may have broke off, but didn't find anything. I feel dumb asking the question, but: How do the blinkers work? What is supposed to trip the switch to turn them OFF?

Thanks,
Jason

Does the blinker/light lever (used to turn on the blinkers) stay up/down, or does it go back to where it should be?

Default stays in the "on" position

Looking at the switch, I can see how SOMETHING is supposed to push against the actuator to return it, but that SOMETHING doesn't appear to be present!

Mine does the same thing, but its HIGHLY temperature dependent. When its cold outside, the lever stays in the on position, but when its warmer outside I can hear a 'click' in the steering wheel and that's my signal telling me that my blinkers will work properly again.

Please let me know when you figure it out. I haven't tried replacing the switch yet at all, so that may just be my problem.

there is a little spring loaded piece in the stearing column in the switch assembley. I've had to replace the wiper side twice. The other side doesn't look too substantial. It's all contained in the switch assembly so it's not to tough to replace. Look on ebay for a wiper switch or turn signal switch or a salvage yard.

Default switch assembly?

When you say that there is a spring loaded piece in the switch assembly, I'll assume that you are talking about the BLINKER switch. I can see that part. It pops out when you actuate the turn signal, and SOMETHING is supposed to trip it back when the steering wheel is rotated.

My question is: What is in the steering column that is supposed to trip this switch?
