Default Blinkers Stay On

Got a '96 Civic as a commuter. Love it. BUT... after I had it for about a month, the blinkers started staying on AFTER I have completed the turn (both sides). I bought a new (used) blinker switch, thinking that it HAD to be the problem, but it didn't fix it.

Upon closer inspection I could not see any kind of actuator in the steering column that would trip the switch after the turn is complete. I searched the floorboard for any kind of part (gear??) that may have broke off, but didn't find anything. I feel dumb asking the question, but: How do the blinkers work? What is supposed to trip the switch to turn them OFF?

Thanks,
Jason
