Default Motor Rebuild for B18C1

Greetings everyone. I've been searching the forums for the above title and found good info but the quesstions that go back to the originator start like "goals and budget". So before I ask what parts, etc...here are my goal for my recently purchased '95 GSR.

1. Keep her all motor. Been through Forced Induction in previous car. 92 Talon
2. Strong bottom end for longevity and built head, mechanicaly enhancing VTEC.
3. Power goals? Sure, increased power would be nice. My focus is to build the motor so I wouldn't have to worry about it when I decide to add power, via a hondata or the like.

Budget=2-4k on motor rebuild
Thanks for your input. I'm a newbie to the forums so excuse my ignorance if there appears to be any.

First off... very clean looking ride, hope to see more pictures of it.

I guess your last experience with boost didn't go too well huh? You should see if "gssr" still has parts from his n/a build. Hes got some good experience, i'm sure if you could chat with him a bit.. he'll give you some good guidelines having been through it.

Do you plan on taking it to Drag / track or fun daily driver?

You aren't going to need Hondata for a mild N/A build.

For your budget, a set of higher compression pistons and some more agressive cams added to an OEM rebuild will give you good reliability and the added power that you want. All you would need in addition to that is a VAFC and some dyno time to make sure it is running at its full potential.

Thanks DAS. I was checking out VTEC controllers and the APEXi VAFC seems to be the weapon of choice. Had another question for the rebuild and I'm sure the budget would need to be adjusted, keeping in mind that I want to keep the car all motor:

Rods? I know of aftermarket ones like crower and such. Would those be necessary?
Head work? Valve springs and retainers? Do those make a difference if I were to increase redline?
Crank? Are there ways to make that stronger?

Thanks man. The turbo experience went pretty well. I had a '92 Talon TSI and it was fun till I flipped it over while I was living in Colorado 3 years ago which caused me to exit the import thing for a while. I wanted to go down the VTEC route a while now and saw my chance.

I will definately take more pics of her as she progresses, have some agressive plans for her just going through maintenance stage right now. She'll be a fun daily driver with some 'umf' when needed. She's GREAT on gas especially with today's gas prices! I have an SUV which was sucking my wallet dry. So now, the SUV is parked while the GZZR tackles the traffic around here. Glad to be back in this game with a whole new adventure!

You won't really need aftermarket forged rods/pistons. You could use higher compression OEM pistons like ITR pistons and that should be sufficient.

Head work is always a good idea. You could port and polish the head. If you are going with a faily aggressive cam like the Skunk2 Stage 2, I would highly recommend getting stiffer springs and upping the redline. Those cams will also compliment the higher compression as well.

The crank is fine even for a highly built setup. You could polish the journals and clean and plug the oil galleys, but besides that, you don't really need to touch it at all.
