For your budget, a set of higher compression pistons and some more agressive cams added to an OEM rebuild will give you good reliability and the added power that you want. All you would need in addition to that is a VAFC and some dyno time to make sure it is running at its full potential.
Thanks DAS. I was checking out VTEC controllers and the APEXi VAFC seems to be the weapon of choice. Had another question for the rebuild and I'm sure the budget would need to be adjusted, keeping in mind that I want to keep the car all motor:
Rods? I know of aftermarket ones like crower and such. Would those be necessary?
Head work? Valve springs and retainers? Do those make a difference if I were to increase redline?
Crank? Are there ways to make that stronger?
