Default Best Engine for Boost?

Which engine is best to boost? There's all this talk about compression, etc, blah blah

So which does the best and has the most Turbos made for them?

you can match just about any turbo with just about any motor... not to say it will work well.

If youre keeping the motor stock, a b18b is probably the safest (moderate compression, thick sleeves). If youre building, you can safely turbo any motor.

Anyway, very vague question... try a search?

This is your one-time shot to come up with a narrower topic of inquiry, otherwise this will be locked.

If you want the best motor to turbo it has to be the B20b it has 8.8:1 compression. wat better than the ls

Ok, things like this are exactly why we don't have "which are best" threads. The B20b/z is the same block casting as the B18b. If you look solely at compression ratio when choosing an engine for boost, then you really aren't educated enough on the subject to make a valid decision.

The B20 has very thin cylinders from the factory, and of the same type as the B18b. In fact, it is much more reliable to start with a B18b, sleeve it and then bore it out to 2.0L if you're worried about displacement, than it is to start with a B20 and slap a turbo on it thinking you're golden.

The B20 is a fine engine, but it is definately not topping the list of my choices for a boosted platform.

exactly what I was going to say. The b20b can only handle very small doses of boost before you have to start worrying about cylinder wall/sleeve integrity. Either motor would be fine sleeved, but then, if youre building the block, you could go with any motor and build accordingly.

K, sorry for being the newb.

Where's a good site to look at Honda Motors and their HP ratings (and pricing).

Basically, could I get a B16 (the one with 170hp) and then boost it later? What all would I have to do to it in order to 'safely' boost it? What are the steps and prices..?

Thanks guys.

You can turbocharge any motor. To keep any engine running smoothly you will need to tune it using some kinda of fuel management. Most kits come with a an fmu which will work, but a standalone allows for better tuning. For best bang for your buck i would go with ls turbo. Yes it doesnt start out with the same amount of hp as a b16 but it has more displacement and can take a lot of punishment. I have seen about the same hp numbers on the same psi for both. And if you blow the b18b another longblock will only cost about $800 at most.

If you want my honest opinion of what the "best" engine is to turbo, I'd tell you it's the biggest displacement one you can afford to turbo. Pretty much all Honda blocks need stronger sleeves to hold up to any serious amount of boost, so all things considered the only real difference is the inital investment in the block.

Ya, B18B is the best for boost - compression really isnt that big of a difference between this motor and the B20 - its all in the sleves like he said
