Default Questions about Ignition

Why and when would i want to upgrade my ignition? I don't know too much when it comes to ignitions, except when running boost or nitrous, i assume it couldn't hurt. But i don't know WHY it would help. My friend is running a 100 shot, but has no upgraded ignition, he's thinking about getting a MSD ignition system. I've seen boosted cars running w/out new systems, and some do. Is it just a precautionary thing against detonation? thnx for your help

Sometimes, running boost can actually create a situation where the mixture coming into the combustion chamber actually exstinguishes the spark from the plugs, and thus isn't completely ignited. Running an upgraded ignition can help in this area if your existing ignition components aren't up to the task of completely igniting the boosted air/fuel mixture, since they usually generate a stronger spark. Along the same lines, this is why boosted cars usually run a smaller plug gap, so that the spark doesn't "blow out" as easilly as it would with a larger gap. I don't know about ignitions preventing detonation, though...
