Default Fun with Clutches

Well, pulled the engine from my car today expecting to rebuild a transmission. Instead, my transmission is in great shape still from it's rebuild a year ago, and my clutch now looks like this:

Downshifting on a regular basis is probably what caused the hub to fail
Lovely considering they consider this a competition clutch, and my normal driving style includes downshifting for corners.

I'm waiting for a call back from Unorthodox Racing. If this is what I get with a sprung hub, I won't get another :fawk:

Humm didnt i just see this in the crx forum, j/k what exactly broke off? the springs get sheared off with? i really dont think its just from downshifting, u'd think itd be more from launching unless u "drop" the clutch while downshifting which sure isnt going to be a comfortable way to stop, i really do say BS. it was a defective clutch and they should replace it for free or at least prorate u for a new one, but as we both know unfortunately ur gonna have to bend over and take it up the a$$ for their incompatence, i hate dealers almost as much as shops sometime, but hey who can u trust? but really ur not pushing a whole lot of hp and our little crx's dont have a great amount of torque, i could see this happening with a 400 hp turboed car but not with ur particular setup. just a thought good luck on reinstalling a new one.

Pic looks fine to me, might try adjusting the brightness on your monitor.

What it appears to have done is used the thin metal, where the friction disk attaches to the hub, as a knife that cut off the rivet heads that hold the hub together. The springs were compressed and dead long before that, but once the rivet heads were mostly gone, the metal just broke and seperated entirely from the hub.

It's getting replaced with a custom made kevlar disk with a solid hub from Unorthodox Racing.

Default Update

Just got the disk from UPS today. It is substantially beefier, let's see if it holds up

Well, I got the clutch in today and my car is living once again to terrorize neighborhood streets, highways and autocross venues!

As for the disk, the UR disk is MUCH thicker on the material the connects the friction material to the splined hub, and the rivets are much more substantial.

As for differences in driving: Again, kevlar is nice! Engagement is smooth, smoother than a stock clutch, yet holds like begeezus. After having both a sprung and unsprung hub with windowed kevlar, I can only say that sprung hubs just feel sloppy. I didn't notice before how much spring action you can feel in the car, because I've never had anything to compare to it before now :dunno: But there's no harshness between gears when shifting like people like to claim without first hand experience, and overall the car just feels more sure of it's gear shifting and power transfer.

Now the real test is to see if this clutch will hold up to the kinds of stresses I'm sure I'll subject it to.

I think most of the harshness associated with unsprung hubs comes from 3 or 4 puck discs, which seem to be the predominant unsprung discs available.

Yeah, that's probably so, but I have a friend with a 4 puck copper disk, and his mom drives his car no problem :dunno:

Here's another fun pic :fawk: :
