Default Where to check oil on manual gearbox?

I have a '92 Civic VX with a 5spd and I'd like to check the gearbox oil level. I looked around and the only plug I could find is on the very end of the case on the passenger side. Is this the place to check the level? Also, what should I use for oil? I just picked up the car and it doesn't have an owners manual.

TIA

Dan

there should be one plug that's almost at the bottom of the tranny that has just a 3/8's square in it. That's the drain plug.

The fill plug is to the left of it about 2/3rds up the tranny. It has a 17mm or so hex and a large flat mating surface.

Just use 10w-30 motor oil in you're tranny. Use a good brand, but I wouldn't suggest something super slick.

No you need to runa thicker oil than that. Just got to the parts store and they will have a small section that has manual tranny oil. Manual trannies take much much thicker oil.

Uh what. Honda manual trannies use 10w-30. If you don't use Honda MTF then put in the 10w-30.

FWD trannies take Honda MTF or comparable or 10w-30. Rear wheel drive trannies can take 90w gear oil depending on manufacturer design, and rear wheel drive diff cases take 90w. Putting 90w in a FWD tranny normally leaves you about one shift before the oil expands with emulsified air and prevents the linkages from moving correctly.
