Default turbo tuning question

I've got:

98 civic dx d16
t3/t4 garrett, intercooled, vortech FMU, walbro 255 HP fuel pump, integra injectors, timing 16 deg. I'm also using the cheap check valves (3 of them) b/c I don't want to spend the money on a missing link if I don't have to. stock ignition also (getting msd ignition next month)

ok I get to 5 psi by 3000 rpms and it holds steady 5 psi, I'm running a lil rich and then I get to 4500 rpms and my car feels like it just dies. It doesn't shut off; it doesn't make any weird sounds, it like when you hit the rev limiter. The car just stops accelerating.

Is the map sensor reading boost?
am I detonating?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

You might be bogging, which indicates a rich situation. Double check your timing and look at your plugs whenever you can.

I checked the plugs and they were pretty black w/ a lil' white around the plug. I'm going to get new plugs on monday, if I can find the right kind.

Also the plugs were gapped @ .040 so I backed them back down to .030

I'm gonna run it again and see if that helped.

Eeek, .040" is too much! That may solve the problem. Sometimes I go as low as 0.28".

the car definitely runs smoother w/ .030 gapped plugs, I'll turn them down lower to .028 tomorrow and try that.

on this last test run I was at a red light and I can rev to 6500 rpms while in neutral. I just can't get past 4500 rpms while I'm boosting...

just for grins, I took out the integra injectors and put the stock civic injectors back in..

and it worked. really weird but it pulls all the way to the redline now, no problems.

once I get to full boost the tach just normally moves up the numbers, but the speedo is moving faster than the tach. plus you hear the turbo spinning... its great

thanks for your help

why don't you try something like Bosch Platinum +4's? Don't have to worry about gapping.

turbo motors are supposed to run colder rated plugs. Also I've heard from a bunch of people that those plugs suck.

checking the plugs is just one more thing to maintain when your running a turbo charged motor, gotta do it. :naughty:

Bosch Platinum +4s are nowhere near suited for this application. They're basically snake oil. Copper plugs will do a better job, and besides they're better conductors.

If you are running a turbo, stay away from all the fancy plugs, ie the +4's the platnums, the splitfire's, and go with a basic copper plug. They are dirt cheap, and work great. The only downside is that you have to replace it more often.
